Jeffrey Stein, Ph.D., joined Sofinnova Ventures in 2005 as a Venture Fellow and Kauffman Fellow, and initiated the firm's expansion into the San Diego region. Over the past 20 years, Jeff has held executive management positions in the biopharmaceutical industry. He currently serves as President and CEO of Trius Therapeutics in San Diego. Most recently he was Executive Vice President, Chief Scientific Officer and a Director of Quorex Pharmaceuticals, a San Diego based anti-infectives company he co-founded in 1999. In addition to his role as CSO, Jeff drove Quorex’s business development function and played instrumental roles in acquiring Protein Vision, Inc., collaborating with Biogen/Idec, securing $38 million in three rounds of venture funding, and overseeing the sales transaction of Quorex to Pfizer. Prior to forming Quorex, Jeff was an early employee and Principal Scientist with Diversa Corporation. Earlier in his career, Jeff was a Principal Scientist with the Agouron Institute in La Jolla, CA.

Jeff has broad ranging scientific interests and has been recognized for his contributions in diverse fields. He is a recipient of the Thomas Alva Edison patent award for discoveries in bacterial pathogenesis, a past member of the National Research Counsel’s Task Group for the Limits of Organic Life in Planetary Systems, a member of the President’s Panel on National Ocean Exploration Strategy, and a past member of the National Science Foundation’s Engineering Center Site Review Team. He also currently serves as Director of Venture Development at UC San Diego.

Jeff conducted his postdoctoral studies as an Alexander Hollaender Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellow at Caltech and his graduate work as a NASA Graduate Student Researchers Fellow at UCSD’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
